Cathy acting as spotter at the AcroYoga workshop
I had the pleasure of attending a very special workshop yesterday at Shakti Yoga Studio in St. John's yesterday. It is called AcroYoga, a style of yoga that combine acrobatic concepts with yoga consciousness. Catherine Willis instructed this 3-hour workshop, who is a part of "Team WillCo: a collaboration of will" based in New York State.
I don't claim to know much about AcroYoga, and actually this class was my very first encounter with it. I can tell you what I took away from my experience. First off, there are three main positions: base, spotter, and flyer. The base plants their roots firmly into the ground for the flyer, who is most vulnerable up in the air. Also important is the spotter who keeps the flyer safe. What I loved about this workshop is that it is confidence-building. You get to play all roles in this collaborative event. I was able to fly, spot, and base everyone; including the men. Even if you are smaller than the others you are playing with you can still be their solid base! Cathy was very encouraging and allowing us to express our creativity, while also promoting safe sport.
Time flew by and I was sad that it was over so quickly. I did not know any of the other participants at the beginning of the workshop, but within minutes we were all interacting with one another. We were putting our trust into each other as we were flown up high into a throne chair, somersault, or a reverse bird. The trust and connection built through these collaborative activities was astronomical. Perhaps our society has become hypersensitive about maintaining a safe "space" from one another that we have inadvertently lost a binding fabric that creates a tight-knit community . Alright, so maybe I won't be pushing people into the air with my feet every day, but I have been inspired to try more consciously to connect with others on a day-to-day basis. With that, it is time to log off and get in touch with myself and the world around me. Talk soon!
